Career Decision Making

Most of our clients come to us to review or rethink their career direction as a pre-requisite to job search.   We have developed a unique and effective career decision making methodology that underpins our practical work with clients.  We facilitate, support and inspire you through this process, maximizing creative thinking and expansion of perceived options whilst minimizing the risk of inappropriate decisions.  View a visual diagram of this process.

The process has several key stages including:

  • Developing clarity and understanding regarding the problems and issues that have prompted you to seek support.
  • Self-assessment using a range of activities and resources to identify your preferences and interests in areas of job elements, work culture, work style and how work should ideally interrelate with rest of your life.
  • This is explored alongside a 360˚ marketplace exploration process that suspends reality and encourages you to identify the types of jobs, industries or ways of working that intuitively interest you.
  • This self-exploration data is then synthesized into an integrated word picture that identifies; conclusions and insights, themes, preferred jobs and industries narrowed into specific options.
  • This information drives an action plan for the next stage where you take a theme or option and conduct a process of research (gathering information) and reality testing (talking to people in the jobs and industries you have identified).   This process is continued until you clearly identify your preferred direction.

Each session is around 1½ hours in duration and sessions are usually between 1 to 2 weeks apart.   Clients need 2 to 3 sessions, on average, to proceed through this process.  When you are clear regarding your career direction, you may seek advice or coaching regarding:

  • Reformatting a Curriculum Vitae.
  • Job search strategy.
  • Interviewing skills.
  • Work life balance or retirement planning.

Fees: Self-referring individuals $135 (incl GST) per hour.

Work-Life Rebalancing Towards Retirement
Starting to think about life with less work? Uncertain about how to maintain purpose and challenge and re-adjust work-life balance in retirement? We facilitate a process which provides an opportunity for individuals to reflect on how you would like your future to look and plan action to achieve it.  For couples it is an opportunity for both of you to share information and identify those activities that will overlap and those that are unique to each individual, enabling increased understanding of what is important to each of you.

Our aim is to maximise creative thinking and expand your perceived options, supporting you to find balance and well being in your chosen future.

The process has several key stages including:

  • Identifying concerns / fears / issues / constraints that may affect planning.
  • Reflecting on key personality traits and resilience levels which may support or decrease your ability to maintain a new future.
  • Using a unique, practical, hands-on resource which quickly identifies interests and activities within some or all of the following categories:

Achievement

- activities which challenge

Engagement

- being absorbed, in the flow

Enjoyment

- pleasurable activities

Meaning

- purpose, something greater than self

Relationships

- the ways we wish to interact with others

Earning

- ways of creating income if desired

 Outcomes include:

  • A clear diagrammatic summary of general themes, priorities and weightings.
  • A list of specific interests and ideas for the future.
  • The first steps of an action plan for moving towards an “ideal” future.

Clients need, on average, one to two sessions to go through this process.  Sessions are typically 1-1½ hours long.  Couples may work through this process together but the sessions are a little longer to enable both individual and shared understanding of outcomes.  Further sessions may be valuable to support the steps which will take your plan from dream to reality.

Please be aware that the financial, residential or health aspects of retirement planning are not our field of expertise.  They will be raised for discussion but we encourage clients to seek other assistance in these areas.
